There’s a huge variety of baby skin care products out there – and not all of them are good! Check the ingredients list on any skin care product and you’ll be amazed at how little you recognise – or can even pronounce. So why put that stuff on your baby’s skin when it’s so easy (and fun!) to make your own products at home?
Basic Balm (makes 120g)
20g Beeswax or Soy Wax
10g Shea or Mango Butter
10g Calendula oil
54g liquid oil (Sweet Almond, Apricot Kernel, Olive, or Coconut)
1g essential oil (Lavender, Chamomile, Dill Seed or Yarrow are great for baby)
0.5-1% Vitamin E
Glass pots
Method
1. Weigh the wax, butter, and oil in a heatproof container and put into a double-boiler.
2. Melt over the heat until the solids are liquid.
3. Remove the container and allow to cool to 45ËšC before adding the essential oil.
4. Pour into glass pots while still liquid and allow to set.
Apply as needed to dry or chapped skin. Great as a protective barrier on baby’s bum!
Calendula is a wonderful herb that may help with healing dry, irritated skin conditions. Vitamin E helps to nourish skin and prolong the shelf-life of the balm, whilst shea or mango butter both have excellent moisturising properties.
