Dresses for every Occasion: Vintage-Inspired Clothing for Kids

Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?

Time management is really important. I also make sure that I know what my priorities are. I work mainly during the afternoon when my toddler is having her nap and when my older daughter comes home from school. Then sometimes, I go back to work when they are all sleeping.

During weekends, especially Sundays, we see to it that we spend time together and never miss a family day.

The drive: What challenges have you overcome?

My greatest challenge businesswise was the shipping delays most especially when the pandemic started. All my dresses are handmade in the Philippines and Covid-19 affected our couriers. I addressed this by being open, utterly honest and consistently updating my customers about the status of their orders.

Another challenge was when my business became so busy, I had difficulty juggling between my role as a mum and an entrepreneur. I overcame this challenge through time management and with the help of my mother-in-law who helps care for my daughter while I work on my business. I also hired a cleaner who comes to our home once a week.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

I love that it gives me a sense of achievement and fulfilment. I have always believed that being a mother should not stop us from living our dreams. Our life does not have to end because we became mothers. Being a mother should inspire us that we can achieve anything we dream of, if we put our heart into it. Being a mumpreneur motivated me and gave me a reason to continue thriving and living every day. It gave me a purpose. I also love that I am able to help my husband with finances and love that I gained new friends.

One of the major cons is that sometimes I find myself struggling to balance my responsibilities as a mum, a wife and a business owner. The stress would sometimes trigger my anxiety and depression. And if I gained new friends, I also gained “enemies.” Having a small fashion business nowadays is very competitive and I have encountered many detractors too, especially when my business was becoming bigger and successful.

Hopes and dreams: What next?

My dream for Kayley Couture is to be recognised as one of the leading shops of vintage-inspired clothing for kids in Australia. I am hoping that it will grow more and soon we will be able to ship internationally.

After this pandemic, I am planning to hold a Fashion Show showcasing my dresses. I am also looking forward to supporting more charities and mums in need.
