The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
The journey of building Northern Tide Apparel has been filled with challenges, each of which has taught me valuable lessons. One of the most significant hurdles was navigating the steep learning curve of starting a business from scratch. With no prior experience in retail, I had to invest a lot of time in research and education to understand the industry. This process was both daunting and rewarding.
Balancing the demands of a new business with family life has also been a challenge. As a mum of two young boys, it was often difficult to find the time and energy to juggle both responsibilities. There were many moments of self-doubt when I questioned whether I could manage it all. However, I learned to prioritise and set boundaries, which ultimately led to a healthier work-life balance.
Additionally, establishing a brand in a competitive market posed another set of challenges. I faced obstacles in gaining visibility and building a loyal customer base. However, by actively engaging with our community, listening to feedback, and continuously refining our products, I was able to turn these challenges into opportunities for growth.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
Running my own business comes with its own unique set of pros and cons, each contributing to the overall journey.
Pros:
1. Flexibility and Autonomy: One of the most significant advantages is the ability to set my own schedule. I can prioritise family commitments and medical appointments, which is crucial for me as a mum. This flexibility allows me to create a work-life balance that suits my lifestyle.
2. Pursuing Passion: I have the opportunity to turn my passion for the outdoors and fishing into a career. Creating products that resonate with women who share this love has been incredibly fulfilling, and seeing customers connect with our brand is amazing.
3. Creativity and Innovation: Running my own business allows me to express my creativity. I learn so much, even now a few years in. From developing my own website, creating new designs and marketing, it keeps my creative side completely satisfied.
Cons:
1. High Responsibility: With ownership comes the responsibility of wearing many hats – from design and marketing to customer service and financial management. This can be overwhelming at times, especially when juggling family responsibilities.
2. Uncertainty and Risk: Running your own business is unpredictable. There are financial risks involved, and the pressure to succeed can be daunting. This uncertainty can lead to stress and self-doubt.
3. Work-Life Balance Challenges: While I have more flexibility, there are times when work can spill into family time, making it challenging to fully disconnect. Striking the right balance requires constant effort and discipline.
Ultimately, the pros and cons of running my own business are intertwined. The challenges have helped me grow and learn, while the rewards make it all worthwhile. I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything, as it has shaped not only my career but also my identity as a woman and a mother.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
As I look to the future, my hopes and dreams for Northern Tide Apparel are both ambitious and grounded in the values that inspired the brand’s creation.
First and foremost, I hope to expand our product line to include even more innovative and stylish options for women who love the outdoors. I aim to keep sustainability a key focus for the future. I hope to further implement eco-friendly practices in our production processes and materials. This not only benefits the planet but also resonates with the growing number of consumers who prioritise sustainable options.
Additionally, I aspire to reach a wider audience, sharing our products with more women across the globe. I believe that every woman deserves to feel empowered and stylish while enjoying the great outdoors, and I want to be a part of that journey for as many people as possible.
Ultimately, my dream is to see Northern Tide Apparel become a trusted name in outdoor apparel for women, recognised for not only our quality products but also our commitment to community, sustainability and empowerment. I’m excited about the road ahead and look forward to continuing this journey with our amazing customers and supporters.
