Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
That is always a hard one for any mother, and my family will always be my first priority. Last term, I began home-schooling our two sons, so it has been a bit of a juggle getting used to the new work-life balance. Work now starts once the boys are tucked up in bed, which can mean a very late night if I have lots of orders to make. I think that a relaxing bath has now become more critical than ever so that the next morning I can still be the best version of me.
The Drive: What challenges have you overcome?
I think my biggest challenge has been time management – definitely this last couple of months. Not feeling like I’m letting people down if the order doesn’t get sent off until tomorrow. Financially it’s been a challenge too. Having so many ideas and things that you’re wanting to create, but putting on your sensible hat and waiting ’til the right time. Most of my products have been created because it’s something I needed or wanted, but there is definitely been a few times that I’ve had to stop and think about whether it’s something my customers would want too.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The advantages are definitely being able to do something for yourself that you’re passionate about. When you become a mother, you can lose your sense of identity, and I feel it is so important to do something that retains who you are. It’s about being your own boss and making whatever time available that you need for your family. For me, the disadvantages are more about the running of the business. I am not very tech-savvy, so struggle with that side of things. Luckily I’ve always got a friend who can point me in the right direction.
Hopes and Dreams: What next?
I’d love to develop my natural/organic range further and build my online presence more. I want to retain the personal touch and keep my products as small batches that are handmade with love, using quality ingredients, which are gentle on the skin.
