A Mother’s Journey Through NICU

Oliver was born at 9.19pm weighing 880grams (1lb 9oz). He was strong, as he had to fight for everything in the womb from Elijah. His problems all came after. Ollie was 14 days old before Mummy and Daddy could cuddle him. At four weeks old and only weighing 1.5kgs, he was transferred to Princess Margaret Children’s Hospital to have a very delicate surgery. He had a tear in the membrane from his intestine to his bladder and the bladder had looped itself through. He had a groin hernia that was also corrected in this surgery. A few days after his surgery we were told that Oliver is the only baby IN THE WORLD to have had undergone this particular type gut surgery and survived! His journey has been featured in a medical journal to give other parents around the world hope.

A month later, he was back at PMH for laser eye surgery as he had level 1 ROPS in one eye and level 3 in the other, which left untreated would have left him blind. With the help of God – another successful surgery! He was only there for an overnight stay and then reunited with his brother once more. Oliver was in NICU for 16 long weeks before he could finally come home. Our family was complete!

Everyday was different. Good mornings, horrible nights, late night/early morning calls from nursing staff to advise of changes or new things needed like iron transfusions, white blood cell transfusions, or baby had to go back on oxygen. Every time those automatic doors opened we took a deep breath in preparation of what we may possibly be walking into.

From the very beginning of my pregnancy I never took any synthetic vitamins. I found something else that worked for me: wholefood concentrate that gave my boys and I everything we needed to thrive. I truly believe both my boys have done so well because I had the nutrition in me to heal them through my breast milk. Ollie was healed and off pain medication three days after each of his surgeries and the doctors/surgeons/nurses were in amazement at how quickly he recovered and how well his scars have healed. It terrifies me to think how different things could have been if I wasn’t as healthy or had the extra nutrition in my body to fuel and heal the three of us.

Now my boys are 2 years old, are growing beautifully and are perfectly healthy. We were told that as they were premature babies that they will always be sick, that’s not been the case! We couldn’t be more proud.
