Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?

It’s definitely a juggle, even more so this year than ever before. We are located in Melbourne so we’ve been in lockdown for most of this year, whilst trying to run biglittlethings and take care of a toddler, all while our hospitality business has been closed since March. But we have somehow made it through: lots of late nights, early mornings, tag teaming morning and afternoons during the week and trying to navigate through a very strange and tough year.

I am still working on the balance but I know our future plans with biglittlethings will allow me to step back from a few things to be able to find the balance between the two.

The drive: What challenges have you overcome?

There’s the everyday challenges of being a mum and a business owner, to the bigger challenges of what 2020 has thrown our way like stock delays, postage delays, lockdown in Melbourne and I guess the challenge of being the marketing, social media, online, stock, orders, customer service and business manager all in one. But learning to step back, being able to hire and then to expand has all been challenging but I love it.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

The pros are that you make the decisions, it’s yours to let your imagination and dreams run wild and you can make some incredible connections to other businesses and customers. Also seeing your dreams become a reality, from seeing your product or business tagged and shared on social media to receiving a thank you email from a happy customer.

The cons are that you make the decisions (haha), it’s not something you can just switch off from and you are constantly thinking about the business 24/7.

Hopes and dreams: What next?

Oh they are endless, but most recently a huge one that’s been ticked off has been moving from our little garage to a warehouse to continue to expand and to create biglittlethings HQ. It was a pinch me moment and still is. I love surprises so watch this space but there’s so many biglittlethings to come.
