A natural deodorant that contains active ingredients like magnesium hydroxide or zinc oxide are ideal, as they are gentle on skin (keeping the pH at neutral or below), and in the case of zinc oxide, even have natural wound-healing properties (for when that razor gets a little too close)! Deodorants that are based on these ingredients are becoming more common, however it can still be difficult to find a deodorant that has no fragrance or essential oils.
We recommend Ternifolia deodorant by Good + Clean for pregnancy and breastfeeding, as it’s gentle on skin with pH-balancing minerals and nourishing oils and butters, and with no fragrance or essential oils is the most gentle in their range (and, it works).
One of the pluses is that this deodorant actively neutralises odours rather than covering them up. This means that the deodorant can be applied at any time (even if you forget in the morning!) and it will still work just as well. They even have minis to throw in your handbag for those super forgetful days.
When it comes to skincare products and pregnancy, there’s no need to worry! Most products are safe, and there are just a few things to consider. Here is our round-up of what to look for and what to avoid:
- Avoid products that contain Retinol or Retinol alternatives like Vitamin A or Bakuchiol;
- Consider avoiding fragrances and essential oils that may irritate skin whilst your skin is extra sensitive and may irritate little noses;
- Cut back on actives like AHAs and BHAs that can disrupt the skin barrier. Your skin may react differently than it usually does, and may be extra sensitive;
- Protect yourself from the sun with a sunscreen that is at least SPF30+ (but higher is better!), and stay inside during the sunniest parts of the day;
- Stick to a simple, gentle and hydrating skin routine, that protects your skin’s natural protective barrier.
