Here, founder Katie Jones talks to The Natural Parent Magazine about her business journey so far.
The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
My Daughter Olivia inspired me to start my brand Mama Glam. I knew when I fell pregnant with her that I wanted to breastfeed her, to provide her with all of the amazing benefits breastfeeding offers, but when she was born, I really struggled with my confidence whilst breastfeeding in public. I’d had a look online for breastfeeding clothes and there was nothing available that suited my style, and this is when I started toying with the idea of starting my own business. I’d also decided when Olivia was born that I didn’t want to return to work, and instead opted for the stay-at-home mum lifestyle, to ensure I was able to watch Olivia grow up – because let’s face it, they grow and change so quickly. Some days I feel like I blink and I’ve missed her learn a new skill.
The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
It’s still very much the beginning for us here at Mama Glam. We’re only 2 months into trading so we’re still learning as we go. I started planning this business launch when Olivia was 2 months old and she’s almost a year old now so it’s been very time consuming, however we’re looking forward to the future at Mama Glam. Our home has definitely been taken over and at least two rooms of our house are currently being used as stock rooms, but this means I’m able to be home with Olivia every day whilst still watching the business grow.
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
The biggest breakthrough we’ve had so far as a new business has been collaborating with other business mums and building a community of successful women who empower one another.
Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
Being a mum to three children and three dogs, along with being a fiancée to my partner Paul, whilst managing everything to do with Mama Glam definitely has been a rollercoaster up until this point.
I’ve been incredibly lucky to be able to watch Olivia grow and learn over the last 10 months and also be very present for our older children’s lives, but I think this is because I’ve tried my best to outline boundaries for the business – and because I try to prioritise work to the best of my ability.
A lot of the behind the scenes admin is usually done when Olivia is either having a daytime nap or when she goes to bed for the night, which then allows me to be far more present in her day whilst she’s awake.
Running a business with such a busy family life is definitely not always glamorous like our name would suggest haha, however I wouldn’t change it for the world. I love how busy the children and dogs keep both myself and Paul, and I love watching Mama Glam grow as a business and as a community too. It definitely has its moments where it’s exhausting, but between myself and my partner Paul, we always
balance everything out. And whilst the business lifestyle isn’t always glamorous, I am so passionate about my brand and everything that we stand for. Empowering women makes me so so happy on a daily basis, and empowering women to breastfeed all across the world has a very special place in my heart.
