Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
Our work and family balance are quite blurred sometimes! With an established construction business, we already worked 24/7! Thebasicb was my little project which I had been slowly developing around an existing family business, babies, buying a house, planning a wedding, and the day-to-day tasks. As a very busy family unit, we take time on the weekends to spend quality time doing things we really enjoy like camping, going to the beach, catching up with friends, and little weekend trips away to rest and reset. My husband and I have a huge appreciation for how much we both do, and are always supporting each other.
The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
There were a lot of challenges! Probably the biggest and most immediate challenge was how little I knew about starting a E-commerce business! Finding suppliers that I was comfortable with to source and manufacture the bras took a long time! I had no idea that apps like Alibaba could connect you to a huge network of worldwide suppliers! I reached out to some other local business owners for help. Then there was the obvious COVID thrown in the mix. This caused some delays as globally the workforce and production chains slowed down. There were also financial challenges. As with any new business, it can be daunting at first with how much cost is involved outright to get a really good start to the business. I am really fortunate to have a supportive husband who helped with start-up costs!
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The biggest pro is definitely the sense of achievement you get seeing your ideas and dreams come to life. There is a huge sense of pride knowing that you’ve created something that is 100% your own, and an appreciation for what it took to get you there. Also being able to share a product you truly believe will help support other people in their journey to motherhood is a wonderful feeling.
The cons. Well I’m not going to lie, the financial side! This can be really daunting in a brand new venture, as you have worked so hard and put so much time and effort into it, and are unsure of what business will look like in the future.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
I hope to continue to develop innovative and authentic designs for Thebasicb that will help support women around the world! I would love to go global to reach even more woman who can benefit from our products.
