The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
My motto is ‘Be the unicorn in the field of horses’ – Elimination communication is counter-culture in our Western society. It’s time to bring this old method back from the past. My message has both a serious and silly nature. All the benefits are serious and sensible, but we’re dealing with poo and pee, so we have that silly side to promote too. EC is fun!
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
My biggest breakthroughs are coming in from overseas. I am being asked to write about elimination communication. It all takes time, so I am working on this project with baby steps.
The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
One of the most challenging aspects when educating parents about the option of elimination communication is that the ideal time to learn falls in a small window of opportunity: when parents are expecting – and toilet learning is often the last thing on their radar at this stage. The few months when a baby is a newborn is the ideal time to start this method and this is indeed a small window! We’re also counter culture and face resistance and excuses, and many people misunderstand the method. It’s challenging to face some of the comments to be honest, when my intention is to help and educate.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
Through my book, online communities and writing, I hope to educate families that they have options when it comes to toileting their baby and hope they learn about the options before their baby is born. I see a lot of parents struggle with toilet training their toddlers, I see a lot of nappy-wearing health issues discussed online, and I see a lot of people struggle with the cost of nappies. These struggles are unnecessary.
There are 3 stages of toilet learning transition and most families start at stage 3. All children go through ‘toilet training’ after they start walking but elimination communication is not toilet training. I want to teach people about the two important stages they are skipping and why they should consider them for the benefit of their baby, for the planet and to save money.
