Warm Winter Crafts: Easy Fireplace-Side Activities for Little Ones and Families

Knitted or Crocheted Accessories

If you have older kids, you can teach them simple knitting or crochet. There’s endless inspiration. They can start with coasters and scarves for practice, or try fingerless gloves or even a hat!

Use smooth, light-coloured, medium-weight yarn with a bulky texture to prevent tangles. Needles should be blunt and made of wood or bamboo for an easier grip and to prevent stitches from slipping off. Knitting and crocheting are among the best quiet activities to enjoy while listening to the festive music, and they make perfect gifts for friends and family during the holidays.

Tips for Parents

No need to rush to the shops to bring winter magic home. Keep it simple:

  • Choose projects using materials you already have, like paper, cotton wool, yarn scraps, jars or felt.
  • Always prioritise safety by keeping materials and decorations a good distance from the fire.
  • Create a craft kit basket with basics like glue, scissors, coloured paper and paint so you’re ready whenever inspiration strikes.
  • Embrace the mess, but set boundaries. Lay down old cloths or newspaper and use washable paints to make tidying up easier.
  • Keep expectations realistic. Small hands have a limited grip, and small minds short attention spans. Opt for quick, simple projects, especially if you’re juggling a baby, too.

Create Memories Together This Winter

Days spent indoors don’t have to be dull. Your little one might not remember much at this age, but that won’t stop you both from enjoying all the fun and mess it brings. With a bit of creativity and fun, you can create winter traditions your child will treasure as they grow up.
