Creative Visions of Motherhood to be Cherished Forever

The drive: What challenges have you overcome?

As much as going solely online has served my business, I do find it hard. It is so hard to convey who I am through a screen. I am very aware I sell products, but it’s much more than just that to me. It’s my love of working with fibre; it’s my passion to connect through stories. I don’t just sell a product; I sell a handmade keepsake that weaves your story into art form.

The online world can be hard, confronting and vulnerable. I have copped a bit of judgement but I have learned to let it wash over me now. My work isn’t to everyone’s liking and I’m OK with that because when it is to someone’s liking, it is more than worth it to keep going.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

The pros are definitely the flexibility. If my children are needing to be home from school, I am here working from home. Now, 7 years on, it feels like the biggest blessing to receive money for doing what I genuinely love. Gosh, there are definitely more pros than cons for me! Like how I get to work anywhere I like. My favourite place is to take my felting into nature.

I suppose a con would be that I don’t get things like unpaid leave or sick pay. I also sometimes wonder what it would feel like to wake up, get the kids ready for school and go into a workplace with other people. Honestly though, I wouldn’t change this. I get to work either outside or by the fireplace in my cosy home on the hill with a view of the harbour.

Hopes and dreams: What’s next?

I would love to eventually have a few of my dolls in art exhibitions amongst other artists. My biggest dream for Heartfelt though would be to have studio dedicated to my business, something just for me. A creative workspace separate from the house with maybe some wildflowers beneath the window sills and a cobblestone path. Oh! And I’d love huge wall-to-wall shelving with little doors for all my wool!

Check out Heartfelt on Etsy to shop their gorgeous handmade dolls. You can also follow them on Instagram and Facebook.
