The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
There have been many challenges and they continue to pop up all the time. Small business is a constant rollercoaster ride.
The list that comes to mind goes from cashflow, marketing, social media and technology (which are not my strong points) to imposter syndrome and lack of confidence. You are wearing all the hats and trying to do all the things, which can be very overwhelming. What has helped me overcome some of these challenges has been outsourcing. Experts can be worth their weight in gold, and it allows me to concentrate on my strengths and other important areas of the business.
Working on self development with a couple of amazing mentors over the last few years has been the best thing for both my personal and business growth too, not to mention the incredible friendships with other brand owners who are riding the same wave.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
There are many pros of running your own business. On a daily basis, I get to work to my own time schedule around my family’s needs and it has enabled me to be very present as the children were growing up. I have been able to build a business around doing what I love and kept my lifelong career in knitwear design going. The joy I get from seeing my products being gifted and bringing happiness on special occasions or helping with everyday parent tasks is a lovely feeling. There is nothing better than a rave review or thankful message.
I have also met lots of amazing people, both customers and other business owners, and made some lifelong friends.
As for cons, despite having the most amazing support from my friends and family, the isolation of working for yourself from a small or home-based office can make it lonely. Wearing all the hats and being responsible for all aspects of the business, having to make some big decisions, can be overwhelming. It can be hard to switch off, and at times, can be all-consuming. Cash flow is another constant challenge and extremely hard to manage, especially in a product-based business.

Hopes and dreams: What next?
Being originally from the north east of England and with all our family still there who we visit as much as we can, it will always hold a special place in my heart. I would love Jujo Baby to become more widely known and available in the UK and Europe. It’s a long-term goal but one that I would love to achieve in the next couple of years.
Visit the Jujo Baby website to find out more. You can also follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
