Gentle, Safer Skincare Alternatives for the Whole Family

The drive: What challenges have you overcome?

I have had many failed recipes and often soap making can end up very costly when things don’t go as planned – a lot of wasted ingredients. It has been challenging sometimes sourcing environmentally friendly alternatives that are also cost effective throughout all aspects of the business, but I am happy with how things are at the moment. I now have compostable courier bags, recycled cardboard used for gift boxes, plastic-free packaging as well as ordering from suppliers that endeavour to do the same.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

The best thing about running my own business is the freedoms it can provide. On the flip side, it can take up a lot more time, as a small business owner then becomes solely responsible for all aspects of running the business – making, creating, packaging, accounts, marketing, ordering, sales……the list goes on!

For me, I love being able to make natural body products and reduce the use of plastics in our lives and environment. Going back to nature with traditionally used ingredients is important to me in an age where so many commercially made products are full of unnecessary synthetic additives. I have endeavoured to create an alternative that is safe and effective.

Hopes and dreams: What next?

I am aiming to increase my sales, including wholesale orders, over the next year, as well as make a few appearances at local markets. In line with this, I am always in the process of expanding my product line and have a few exciting new products on the way. My dream is to have a New Zealand made licence on each bar of soap and then look at exporting overseas. It is my dream that Flax and Fern can replace my day job and help as many people as possible use safe and gentle products on their body!
