After turning to hypnotherapy to help with her own healing and transformation, Mia Turner was inspired to train in the techniques herself, so that she could help and empower others on their healing journeys. She is passionate about supporting mums and dads to heal the past and help break the patterns of generational trauma, allowing them to be conscious and connected parents. Based in Rotorua, New Zealand, Manta Mind Hypnotherapy offers a range of professional hypnotherapy services, both online and in person, to ‘help you change your mind, so you can change your life’. Here, Mia shares her story with The Natural Parent Magazine.
The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
I had an emotional breakdown when my son was around 3. The mask I put on to ‘keep going’ and ‘be strong’ and be the ‘perfect’ mum well and truly fell off and I felt stuck in a dark hole full of anxiety and overwhelm and I simply wasn’t coping. I’d struggled during most of my life after experiencing several traumatic events and the subsequent ‘big feelings’ when I felt triggered. I found talk therapy gave me insights and understanding but never gave me the healing and transformation I needed. So I approached a hypnotherapist as an alternative to help me get out of the dark hole I found myself in as a new parent.
No other time in my life has it been as important for me to heal those old wounds, to see and understand the triggers and patterns of my behaviour and how it can impact the ones I loved the most, and to transform these unconscious programmes so I could ‘be the parent I needed when I was younger’.
I found the hypnotherapy was nothing short of transformational, so much so I decided to train in the techniques so I could empower others on their healing journey. My passion in particular is helping break the patterns of generational trauma by supporting mums and dads to heal the past so they can be conscious and connected in their parenting journey.
The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
I invested a lot of money in my initial hypnotherapy training whilst working for the Police in my ‘usual job’ as an intelligence analyst. I realised I needed to ‘do something’ after investing that much, so I created Manta Mind Hypnotherapy. I got approval from my employer to be self-employed whilst working for them and started promoting my services offering hypnotherapy for any issue.
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
The COVID lockdown shifted me from mainly offering in-person hypnotherapy sessions to only offering online sessions. Once this became the norm, the reach was much wider. Being able to provide my service to people in the comfort of their own home, anywhere around the world, as long as they had a good internet connection, changed everything. And it is just as effective as being face to face. Nowadays I do both options – it’s nice to know I’m not limited by geography.
Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
I am a single mum and have a good co-parenting arrangement with my son’s dad. On the weekends and evenings that I am child free, I see clients and work on my business. It’s the sort of role you can do as little or as much as you want, so it’s a great balance. I also block out time for me and my son to make sure we have a great connection and have many opportunities to have fun and make awesome memories.
