Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
After my husband Dan passed away nearly three years ago I was initiated into the world of solo-parenting our then 15-month-old (wow, to all of you in that boat, you are amazing). Completely daunted by the thought I’d have to financially provide and resolute over the things that were truly important, I think I’m so fortunate to have found something that gives me such flexibility. Although I will say this – find your people. Community has helped me juggle it all. Real-life stuff like Mondays I make dinner for friends and on Wednesdays they cook for me. Every. Single. Week.
The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
My personal drive is tied to the past few years. Building a life again from the ground up without Dan has proposed challenges I didn’t expect. Always confident in myself and what I could do professionally, I was surprised that I needed to rediscover that confidence again. When you have a personal champion like I had in Dan, I got to benefit from all the encouragement that he brought. So – I needed to become my own champion and pick myself up when I inevitably wasn’t flawless in my new ventures. Is it challenge overcome? Maybe challenge accepted.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
Definitely finding that balance between everything you want to do and everything you CAN do. When it’s small business, success means everything and failure means everything too.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
We want to offer families more choices over their keepsake blankets but I’d also love to explore more ways for families to help celebrate their kids and grandkids. The concept of legacy and gifting things that have meaning for a lifetime can get lost in modern culture and I for one would love to see these championed again.
