The Drive: What challenges have you overcome?
On a personal level I have had to work through an enormous amount of mother’s guilt for being what is a challenging mix of a stay at home mother, who is also working from home. Some of the external care options I had arranged for my eldest daughter didn’t work out for us and I’ve had to hold off on some of my business plan to be more available for her. On a business level, I’ve had to work my way through stock arriving damaged, late or not at all! This along with language barriers and fluctuating exchange rates have taught me to be flexible and to allow for stock and financial buffers.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
I am currently caring for my children and building a sustainable lifestyle property; running my own business allows me the flexibility to move around between my commitments. A con is definitely the challenge of not being able to call in sick and managing all your own financials.
Whilst staying at home with my girls I started dreaming up my own little retail store for families who wanted to make natural, ethical and sustainable purchases.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
My vision for the store still feels like a work in progress! I am currently working on a few collaborations, which will add my own creative element to the shop. I hope to find a balance of working for myself, living simply and sustainably with my family and being able to pass on the elements of the business I don’t enjoy as much to future employees.
