The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
I feel very grateful not to have had major challenges. My most recent challenge has been that my web developer inadvertently left a button ticked on my website asking search engines not to crawl it! It nuked my search results, and it’s taken months to repair. I was so relieved to realise I can still make a living without a functioning website, though – lots of families come back each year for update photos so that kept me ticking over, and word of mouth remains a really strong source of recommendations. I’m so glad that my website is finally back on Google though, as it’s where a lot of families find me!
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
I love that if I have an idea, I don’t have to take it to a team for approval – I can run with it and see where it takes me.
It can be tough not having a department of experts to turn to when a problem rears its head – running your own business, you have to become a bit of a Jack of all trades. I never thought I’d know as much as I do about accounting or IT! The support from other photographers can be amazing though; it’s such a helpful community.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
My daughter and I are starting a personal photography project – just for fun, and I’m really looking forward to spending that quality time together. She’s interested in nature photography at the moment – we’re heading to the coast to see what we can capture. Children’s interests come and go so quickly, but wouldn’t it be amazing to have a mother & daughter photography business!
