The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
Firstly, importing: sourcing, pricing, quality control, transport, customs. That was a huge learning curve and one that I somehow managed to master pretty quickly – after a few mini heart attacks! Haha.
Secondly, creating a website from the ground up. This was my biggest challenge. Many times I felt like throwing the computer out the window, but I got there in the end, and I’m so proud of the little space I have created.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
In terms of pros, the biggest perk of owning my own business is the flexibility. Having two young children and a part-time job, the ability to work non-traditional hours is invaluable.
Being a small business owner may be one of the toughest jobs, but it’s also one of the most rewarding. I get so much satisfaction from knowing that I am the creator of my products, the vision and the motion. Everything begins and ends with me. Everything I create, every choice I make, is completely mine: the late nights, trials and errors, amazing learning experiences, all of it – the journey is mine, as is the triumph.
As for cons, my mind is always buzzing with new ideas! Sometimes I wake during the night with a random but brilliant idea and have to get up and write it down, just in case I forget by morning. There isn’t a lot of time to rest.
The start-up is a bit like a roller coaster. The highs are really high and the lows are really low. That can be challenging.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
I’m currently in the process of creating an amazing toy from scratch. It’s a bit of a surprise so I can’t give too much away. But I’m super excited to create a little masterpiece I can call my very own.
There will be lots of giveaways and fundraisers, and I’ll continue to support some very worthy charities along the way. My goal is to successfully manage a beautiful boutique store, but Hush Little Babe is so much more than retail therapy and cute baby products.
I am passionate about raising awareness of sensitive issues, providing support and resources to those in need and giving back to the community.
I have worked tirelessly to create a safe space for women to obtain information and tools to cope with many different situations that we, as women, face on a daily basis – the good, the bad and the ugly!
And last but not least, the sweetest dream: a little miracle baby! Stay tuned.
