Kayla is the founder of The Sourdough Way, a brand born from her desire to bring wholesome, additive-free food back to the family table. As a mum of three, Kayla understands the daily juggle of modern parenting and the longing for simple, nourishing traditions in the midst of busy life. What began as a personal journey, learning to make real sourdough bread at home, has grown into a beautiful offering of thoughtfully curated sourdough starter kits with practical, step-by-step instructions, workshops and online courses. Her approach makes sourdough accessible to even the busiest households, guiding others to slow down and feel confident in their kitchens. Kayla fits sourdough baking into her daily rhythm with kids by embracing flexibility, simplicity and intention. Through The Sourdough Way, she shares not just how to bake bread, but how to reconnect with real food, create meaningful routines and nourish the ones we love, one loaf at a time. Here she talks to The Natural Parent Magazine about the inspiration behind The Sourdough Way, the biggest breakthrough with her business, and her hopes and dreams for the future.
The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
I’ve always loved being in the kitchen, and cooking has been my happy place since I was a kid. But my real sourdough journey began when my youngest of three kids started having tummy issues and was diagnosed with a gluten intolerance by our naturopath. I knew our bread had to change. I’d already switched our family to organic foods and pasture-raised meats, but finding a simple, gut-friendly sourdough loaf without the $18 price tag and long list of ingredients I couldn’t even pronounce? Nearly impossible!
That’s when I knew something had to change. I wanted to feed my family real bread, made with simple, nourishing ingredients and I wanted others to have access to that too.

The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
I rolled up my sleeves, dove into the world of sourdough and taught myself everything I could. And you know what? It wasn’t nearly as intimidating as I thought. It was simple, fun and incredibly rewarding. Once I started baking regularly, friends and family kept asking how they could learn too.
That’s how The Sourdough Way was born – a way to bring back real bread, with real ingredients, for real families. I started with creating in-person, hands-on workshops that quickly led to expanding with sourdough starter kits and step-by-step recipes. I now also offer beautifully designed online courses that are easy to follow and simple to fit into any lifestyle.
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
The biggest breakthrough has been realising that I wasn’t alone and that so many other families were in the same position, wanting to cut out preservatives and feed their families real, nourishing food. When I started sharing my sourdough journey, I saw how much it resonated. People wanted to learn, they cared about ingredients and they were craving something more honest and homemade. That’s when I knew The Sourdough Way wasn’t just about bread; it was about a movement back to real food, and my message was something people truly wanted to hear. My absolute favourite part has been the incredible community that’s grown from it. Connecting with like-minded families who are passionate about slow living, gut health and feeding their kids well is what keeps me inspired every single day.

Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
Balancing work, family and a business can definitely get chaotic, especially with 3 kids and their busy sporting commitments, plus my part-time work as a dental hygienist. But we’ve found that cooking from scratch is our anchor. No matter how hectic things get, we always come back to our roots: making meals from real ingredients to nourish our bodies. It’s not always easy, but it’s what keeps us grounded, connected and intentional.
That’s why everything I create at The Sourdough Way – from our recipe books and starter kits to the online course and workshops – is designed to fit into real family life. Whether you’ve got 10 minutes during nap time or time to bake on the weekend, you can still make beautiful, gut-friendly sourdough without stress or overwhelm.
