Helping Your Child to Love Fine Art At Home

Making a self-portrait

The famous portraits of fine art could really inspire your child to create their own self portrait. You could experiment together with different styles, such as the colourful and unusual Portrait of Dora Maar by Pablo Piccasso. Or try using pastel colours like Woman With Hat by Henri Matisse.

A self-portrait could be simple, just using basic shapes to represent the different parts of the face, or your child could try adding details to portray emotions, such as raised eyebrows or a frowning forehead.

Fine art doesn’t have to be something that you only see and talk about in a museum. Get creative together and enjoy recreating some famous paintings, or have a go at some expressive portraits. These fun activities can really inspire a deep enjoyment of art for the future.
