The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
While the idea of the Fertility Hope Box was instinctive, its development proved to be a steep learning curve. After spending a year on the design and creation of the Fertility Hope Box, the next big obstacle was that we had no idea how to let the world know about our product. Posting on social media and spruiking our products did not come naturally to us. So the learning continued. It has also been quite challenging to create and work on this business while in separate states. We have made it work though and we are proud of how far we’ve come.
For better or worse: what are the pros and cons of running your own business?
One of the pros is doing something you love and in our case with your best friend. It is also wonderful knowing that Hopes Held High can help soothe some broken fertility hearts across Australia and New Zealand.
Another rewarding aspect is receiving feedback from our customers and realising the impact of our products. One customer was a lady who could not physically support her sister due to COVID-19, and not being able to travel. She was so appreciative that Fertility Hope Box provided a way for her to offer support and hope during her sister’s fertility journey.
One of the difficulties of running a small business is finding the time to learn new skills such as marketing and financial planning. Making time in our busy schedules to see and talk to each other to discuss the business is also challenging, particularly in the face of the COVID pandemic. Although we are fortunate to chat online, it’s not the same as chatting over a cup of tea.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
We are hoping to grow the business and are currently working on new products to add to our Fertility Hope Box. We are excited to soon include them in our range and share them with our customers.
